The Unending Story

by Rebecca Shaw

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6

A friend said to me that some of the things we worry about in our children’s lives we have to trust God to use as part of their testimony, a part of their story of who he is and what he has done in their life and through them.

This made me think… I always thought of my testimony as the story of my salvation, the beginning of my walk with Jesus. It didn’t occurred to me that our testimony is living and breathing and carries on throughout our life. I didn’t fail to see the continued impact that Christ has on my life but somehow missed the bigger picture of the whole, past, present and future, that all my circumstances accumulate into a living, unending story… a testimony of God; of who he is, what he does, how he orchestrates and his faithfulness in our lives.

When we remove the speed bumps, the hiccups, the mountains, the valleys; we simultaneously remove some of the victory. I thought back through all the victory through Jesus I have personally already experienced and it gave me a renewed hope for my future in Christ. It made me excited and curious to see what continued growth and glory is yet to come.

My past was without him; though I see now how he was always there like a patient father waiting for his rebellious child to return home. But looking back to that window time, I made my own way, I wrote my own rules and exalted only that which suited me. I waded through years and socially acceptable alcoholism, materialism, self-hatred and simultaneously south exaltation. I hurt for those years, but also I see the power of Jesus’s redemptive love, just that much clearer.

No two of us have the exact same story or upbringing or joys or heartache. We all have one thing in common we’re all created by God for his glory to be loved relentlessly by him. We all have a legacy of redemptive love that’s already been accomplished through Jesus on that rugged Cross.

Through our acceptance of this… this free gift of redemptive love, we all… everyone of us, will have a testimony that reveals him and his breathtaking power and might through us in this ongoing story of him.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10
