Thanksgiving for Gods Gifts translates to sharing with others

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.  18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

Our text let’s us know every good gift comes from God.

This agrees completely with the account of Creation in Genesis chapter 1. God calls things he has created good seven times. The 31st verse in the Bible says: And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good…

I wish I could look back on the 31st day of the month and say all I did was good but I can’t!

Thank You for all your very good Creation Lord.

I would like us to take note that God spoke all these things into existence… and even though God formed man in a special way in his own image from the dust of the earth and though he breathed his own breath into him... still, you can go back in Genesis and see how mans creation was connected to Gods word. This will tie into our text a little later.

Next, consider this: Gods Creations were his firstfruits. He created them individually. The trees did not come from the seed of other trees. The animals did not come from the offspring of other animals. Even Adam was not a descendant of anyone else; he was a firstfruit of God. Again, this will tie into verse 18 of our text shortly.

Concerning Gods good creation of Man, just a couple chapters later in Genesis 3 this first man turns against his God and provider siding with satan. The world is broken as sin, death and entropy enter Adam and his wife Eve’s lives as well as all their descendants.

But in his mercy and grace, God promised his Son Jesus would come and pay the wages of our sin with his own death. Then he would rise again on the third day ready to proclaim us who believe in him to now have his righteousness.

3 - Again, verse 18 of our text says: Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

Gods original Creations were his firstfruits spoken into existence by his word… And interestingly it is now through Gods word again that we can become a new spiritual firstfruit of creation in Christ Jesus. We can’t inherit salvation or new life from our parents or any in our family tree. That would be difficult since we all descend from Adam and Eve who’s sin separated them from Gods fellowship. God works in us directly one on one through faith by the seed of his word and through his Holy Spirit.

2nd Corinthians 5:17 says: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

But God doesn’t stop with Salvation... he is still creating his fruit in our lives by the seed of his word which will grow and go on to motivate us to share his word with others. What are these fruits that motivate us?

Galatians 5:22 says: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

These fruits are attributes and characteristics of God that he wants to grow in his children. They quicken us to action in our heart and life to move our arms and legs and open our mouth to help our neighbor in thousands of ways and to share with them the seed of Gods word that they to may be a firstfruit creation in Christ growing in the character of Christ.

Today we have a lot to be thankful for, both physically and spiritually. Let’s share these amazing gifts that come through Gods word with others.
