Take Time To Waste Time Blake Farley
"But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed." -Luke 5:16 (NIV)
For better or worse we live in a "What's next?" culture. It's always on to the next job, project, check, kids little league game, or some other urgent event. Our schedules are becoming more and more full. I get it just this week I'll be in 5 different cities, preparing 10 devotions like this one, and doing some dreaded wedding planning with my fiancé. Don't tell her I said that. Seriously, being busy isn't a bad thing. All of the things I'm doing this week are good and exciting opportunities.
Proverbs 13:4 says, "The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied."
You should live your life on mission with a holy ambition, but please take time to "waste" time.
Clearly I don't think resting is really a waste of time, but to those who don't believe in God there are certain things that just seem like a waste of time. You, as a Christ follower need to take extended periods of rest, whole days where your only goal is to worship and pray to God, weekends that are reserved for family. I know your life is busy and it's all important, but even Jesus took time to waste time. I promise His mission was far more important than yours!
You'll be tempted to read this and think, "Yes, I should do that." and then go on with your busy life. Right now, I want you to take time and pick a specific time of rest and protect it like you would any other part of your busy schedule. Do it, because even Jesus took time to waste time!
