Proverbs in 365 Devotions
The Lord’s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the dwelling of the righteous. Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble he gives favor. The wise will inherit honor, but fools get disgrace.

It's sometimes unsettling to think that a loving God would purposefully curse, scorn or disgrace anyone. We've all been told that God is the perfect example of love, right? But how does that add up with passages of scripture like this one? Well, if we let it stand on its own it doesn't and that's why viewing scripture in light of scripture is so important. Earlier in verse 12 and in the New Testament we read that the Lord disciplines those he loves.
As a dad of 2 boys I have to love them enough to discipline them when they "miss the mark" their mother and I have set for them. And when we sin we "miss the mark" God has set for us. So there's some comfort in knowing that he loves enough to do what he has to get us back on point. Is it fun? No. At the time we're being disciplined it can seem like the worst thing ever but looking back on my own life I can see the absolute mess I'd be if he hadn't loved me enough to curse, scorn or disgrace me when I needed it.
