Proverbs in 365 Devotions
Proverbs 14:11 The house of the wicked will be destroyed, but the tent of the upright will flourish. 12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.
Houses, Tents And Mansions
At first glance it may seem a bit discouraging that Solomon says the wicked get to live in a house while the upright only live in a tent. Well, that doesn’t seem fair… but hey… the thing is… the possessions of the upright consist of a little bit more than a tent. See, those who have been given the righteousness of Christ and so are upright… they don’t really live here… Maybe we could put a bumper sticker on our tent that says “my other house is a mansion” because we’re just passing through and will soon come to the place that Jesus went to prepare for us. Its the Spiritual Kingdom of God…That's our homeland now. If you know Christ there is a sense in which you were actually born in that kingdom… It is your birthplace and homeland. Look, there is a full inheritance waiting for us there and most importantly we will be with the Lord.
So we are not called to get comfortable here as though we have arrived in the land our hearts have longed for. We are not to seek peace or solitude in what this place has to offer. Don't settle down and grab up everything as though this is to be desired above all… Sometimes we use the phrase “to die for” as something extremely desirable… But that's exactly what happens for those who make this world their home… Solomon says:
“The house of the wicked will be destroyed”
Verse 12 goes right along with it:
12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.
What seems right is different from what is actually right and is relative to each persons own rationalization to have whatever they desire… The end of that wickedness ends in death… And its a horrible death not only separated from their body but from the Spirit of God and everything good.
But the second part of verse 11 is encouraging for believers.
“the tent of the upright will flourish”
That goes along with the rest of the Bible for sure; and its not the kind of flourishing that goes with making this world our home or success by their standards… We flourish on the mission which we are here for… as we are passing through… living in tents… not making this our home.
We’ve talked about 2nd Corinthians 8 and 9 before which is very clear how even those believers who are poor and oppressed will flourish in every good work and overflow with joy. 2 Corinthians 9:11 says: You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.
Old mission: This world is our home… We seek and proclaim our own glory and wind up with bitterness and death.
New mission: We seek to see and share more of Gods glory and get loads of joy and life.
That's how it works… God created us that way.
Do you want to flourish while living in a tent or do you want to make this world your home and never find satisfaction or joy?
I really love Psalm chapter 1… it tells the same truth as today's verses. I’d like to read it as an outro and in so doing let God have the last word in this devotion.
1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.
3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
6 for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
