Christmas Treasure Of Exceeding Joy

One night there were lowly shepherds in a field… When an angel of the Lord appeared to them and told them where to find the greatest treasure in the Universe… And joy… not just joy but great joy!

Luke 2:10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

The angel announced what?... "good news of great joy that will be for all the people”; a reason for our hearts to be glad all the days of our life whether rich or poor in this world… the greatest treasure in the Universe has arrived.

Did the shepherds respond to this news?

...16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. ...20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

Later, wise men came from the East. They had likely traveled hundreds of miles. It is possible they had studied works of Daniel the Prophet who had lived in the Persian Empire and to whom God had given a timeline of the coming Messiah. Nevertheless, somehow God had given them the treasure map to find the greatest treasure in the Universe. And so they followed the star he told them to...

Matthew 2:9 ...And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.

The angels had promised that this good news would bring great joy… Remember the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God. When we are given eyes to see Jesus as a treasure greater than anything the world gives… we automatically have exceedingly great joy.

11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

So the wise men gave away their earthly treasures and were given the greatest treasure in the Universe… Jesus. And like the shepherds they had exceedingly great joy promised by the angel.

In Mark 10 a rich young ruler ask Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. I’m not sure the young man truly knew what eternal life was. Eternal life is being connected to God with Jesus forever… It is delighting in him as the greatest treasure in the Universe… That means over and above anything the world might offer.

The young ruler apparently thought there was something he could do to get Eternal life. He told Jesus how he was a keeper of the commandments of Moses. Can anyone tell me what the first of the 10 commandments is?

Exodus 20:3 “You shall have no other gods before me.

Do you think this young man had made himself some kind of god that he had put before the true God?

Jesus knew what the greatest treasure in this young rulers life was.

Mark 10:21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

What do you think he did?

Mark 10:22 Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

He missed out on the greatest treasure in the Universe.

Though this young man was rich in the ways of the world and he had did good types of things with his life did he find joy?

Matthew 13:44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
