Alien Hand Syndrome

Matthew 6:3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

* There is an actual medical condition known as Alien Hand Syndrome where one hand of a person seems to move with a specific purpose sometimes grabbing and choking their own neck or scratching at their eyes. People suffering from this claim it is as though that hand is controlled by an alien source and not the individuals own intent. No joke!, you can do a search on the web. Usually the brain communicates with the body simultaneously including both hands so they can all work together and support one another on a given project. For example, when you’re threading a needle the left hand knows what your right hand is doing. It comes in pretty handy when a doctor is doing brain surgery, a mechanic is rebuilding a transmission or a person is unfortunately texting on their phone while driving a car.

* Though normally Alien Hand Syndrome is not something we should seek to acquire in our passage Jesus is saying there actually is a context and a time for not letting the left hand know what the right is doing.

To let your left hand know what your right hand is doing would be like telling yourself how great your are. Dwelling on your achievements… I am tempted to think well of myself and sometimes I do. But the truth is that the only good in me comes from Jesus. I am his workmanship for his glory!

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

So today, instead of bragging to ourselves about ourselves, lets brag on the only one who is good and righteous… Jesus Christ who received the wages of our sins for us on the cross and who rose from the grave to defend our righteousness in him.

Today... Let's brag on Jesus!
