Proverbs in 365 Devotions
Proverbs 6:23 For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life, 24 to preserve you from the evil woman, from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.
A Light For
Cold And Damp
In A Land Carpeted
One summer my best friend and I camped high in the Colorado mountains about 40 feet above from where an underground spring bubbled up to feed a creek. It was good water for drinking and boy was it cold!!! I think the temperature was in the mid to low 30’s Fahrenheit.
In the evenings one of us would take two five gallon buckets and walk down a steep rocky slope to gather water from the spring for the next morning to use for washing, breakfast and also for the days needs. When it was my turn to get the water I had waited too long. It was dark. With no extra hand to hold a flashlight, I cautiously made my way to the spring with a 5 gallon bucket in each hand. Now this is not a high action adventure story from my life. I don't remember loosing the buckets or falling flat on my face then splitting my head on a rock with the cold water falling back in my face drenching me and finally the buckets hitting my head with a final blow. No, although it could have; nothing like that happened; and yet this was still a traumatic experience for me. The anxiety I felt in not knowing where to step first going down and then coming back up trying to awkwardly balance 30 pounds in each hand on a steep rocky hill in the dark not knowing where there were holes in the ground or sharp rocks sticking from the incline… all that was enough to imprint this unstable feeling of uncertainty on my mind as a fixed memory.
Look; all these writings of Solomon to his son... all the instruction to follow after knowledge and understanding and wisdom was so that his son might not fall on the dangerous pathways in the minefields of sin. They are for him and us to serve as not only a light but a warning against having a love affair not only with the adulterous woman mentioned throughout Proverbs but the love affair with the world instead of our Creator.
Jesus said in John 12:46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.
In the darkness, of the night
Up, behind and down the street
Out of mind and out of sight
Steel traps lie at our feet
Some will wake and splash their face
To chase the day in sunshine bright
But it's as though a can of Mace
Has sprayed their eyes and veiled the light
In this threatening world I camp
Oh Lord it's you who lights my lamp
In murky shadows mold and damp
The land is carpeted with unsuspecting carcasses
Your word is a lamp, Your word is a light
In you we find our great delight
Light of the world, Your love unfurled
Greatest treasure, priceless pearl, you dispel our darkness
